Diversity Book Review
Reviewer: Jacqueline Bonforte, Manager, Corporate Governance and Legal Operations
Author: Michelle Obama
Michelle Obama’s memoir, Becoming, is Ms. Obama’s story beginning as a girl growing up in Chicago all the way through her experiences as First Lady. Ms. Obama talks about her school-age experiences and her reality check once she became a high-powered corporate lawyer. She discusses her relationship with Barack, her experience with motherhood and the compromises she made for her husband’s political life.
Ms. Obama challenges her readers to “invite one another in. Maybe then we can begin to fear less, to make fewer wrong assumptions, to let go of the biases and stereotypes that divide us. Maybe then we can better embrace the ways we are the same. It’s not about being perfect. It’s not about where you get yourself in the end. There’s power in allowing yourself to be known and heard, in owning your unique story, in using your authentic voice. And there’s grace in being willing to know and hear others. This, for me, is how we become.”
Regardless of political party, this key message on Diversity is a smart business choice for us all.
